Is there a smarter way to earn on every meal? The Amex Gold Card delivers

American Express® Gold Card

Our review

The American Express® Gold Card is ideal for those who dine out frequently and travel often. Its rewards structure heavily favors restaurants and groceries, making it a top choice for food and drink lovers.

While the $325 annual fee (see rates & fees) might seem steep at first glance, the card's benefits can quickly outweigh the cost. The combination of dining and Uber credits often covers a significant portion of the fee before you even start earning points.

The earning potential is impressive: 4X points at restaurants worldwide (up to $50,000, then 1X) and U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 per year, then 1X), plus 5X points on prepaid hotels booked through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel App, 3X points on flights booked through AmexTravel.com, the Amex Travel App, or purchased directly from airlines, and 2X points on prepaid car rentals (via AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel App) and on cruises booked and paid through AmexTravel.com. You also get up to $120 in annual dining credits at Grubhub (including Seamless), Buffalo Wild Wings, Five Guys, The Cheesecake Factory, and Wonder, plus up to $120 in Uber Cash annually — just add your Card to your Uber account and you'll get $10 in Uber Cash each month to use on orders and rides in the U.S. when you select an Amex Card for your transaction.

American Express offers excellent customer service, and the Membership Rewards program provides flexible redemption options with 20 airline and hotel transfer partners.

If you're new to premium rewards cards, the Gold Card offers a great balance of perks and earning potential without the higher fees of ultra-premium cards. It's a card that can quickly become your go-to for daily spending, especially if you enjoy dining out or cooking at home.

The travel benefits, while not as extensive as some higher-tier cards, still provide real value with no foreign transaction fees, a baggage insurance plan, and complimentary Hertz Five Star® Status (enrollment required). Plus, the ability to earn elevated points on flights and prepaid hotels gives you a nice boost on your travel purchases.

One of the standout features is the card's versatility. Whether you're grabbing a quick lunch, doing your weekly grocery shopping, or booking a flight for your next vacation, you're likely to be earning bonus points. This makes it easy to accumulate a substantial points balance without much effort.

Is it worth it?

Yes, especially for frequent diners and travelers. The statement credits offset the annual fee, while the high earning rates on dining and groceries can accumulate points very quickly. However, if dining and travel aren't major spending categories for you, you might want to consider other options. For those who appreciate food and travel regularly, the American Express Gold Card offers a compelling mix of earning potential, useful credits, and redemption flexibility.
