Chase Sapphire Preferred Card review: A top travel rewards card for beginners

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

Our review
The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is a stellar entry-level travel rewards card that's easy to recommend to almost anyone, especially those new to the points game. With its reasonable annual fee and generous rewards structure, it's the perfect stepping stone into the world of travel points. You might be new to annual fee cards, but when you consider the very valuable sign-up bonus (which often covers several years of the fee) and the ongoing benefits, it quickly becomes clear that this card offers tremendous value.
If you factor in the points earned from everyday spending, particularly in the bonus categories of travel and dining, you're looking at a card that practically pays for itself if not goes beyond. And that's before we even talk about the excellent travel protections and the flexibility of Chase Ultimate Rewards points.
You're getting 2X points on travel, 3x points on dining worldwide and 5X points on travel booked through Chase Travel℠, no foreign transaction fees, and top-notch travel insurance benefits. Plus, there's the ability to transfer points to 13 travel partners.
In our opinion, this card is simply one of the best starter travel rewards cards around in terms of both benefits and value for money. It strikes an excellent balance between premium perks and accessibility for those just getting into the points and miles game. Chase has a reputation for excellent customer service, and the Ultimate Rewards program is known for its user-friendly interface and versatility.
Is it worth it?
Absolutely. Since the annual fee is quite moderate compared to premium travel cards, you can feel great about earning lots of rewards without breaking the bank. You can easily maximize your rewards-earning potential, especially if you frequently spend on travel and dining. However, if you're a very frequent traveler or high spender, you might want to consider its bigger sibling, the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, for even more perks (at a higher annual fee).
For most people starting their travel rewards journey, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card hits the sweet spot of great benefits, flexible redemption options, and a manageable annual fee. It's a card that can grow with you as you become more adept at maximizing travel rewards.
